Why does it seem that all maternity clothing is all flowery/pastel colored and not trendy?

I love my fat cat Mewtwo asked:

I’m only 17w 4d and have a flat belly…but have been looking around to see what kind of clothing i will be wearing once i start showing. I looked in all maternity stores…and in old navy and all the maternity clothing i saw was all flowery, pastel colored, cutsey wootsey, un flattering and un trendy. I really like the glam and bohemian look and still want to dress like this. i dont understand why the designers of maternity clothes think we want to dress all cute just because were pregnant…mabye we still want to dress stylish and not change our style all together. does anyone know where they sell trendy maternity clothing? glam maternity clothing? bohemian maternity clothing??? i was thinking of just shopping at a plus size store but i dont like lane bryant or torrid…

Try e-bay. I am plus size to begin with, so when I was pregnant, finding maternity clothes that didn’t look like I was dressing myself in a flowery trash bag was hard. I found lots of awesome clothing on E-bay that I was very happy with! Since you only wear maternity clothes less than a year, I had no problem wearing someone’s hand-me-downs. There was no noticeable wear and tear to anything I bought!

honestly when it comes to shirts and dresses and stuff i never got maternity clothing. just those flair type shirts with extra material so they look all “flowy”. you can find those everywhere cuz they’re “in style”. and for dresses i just went to ross and got some stretchy dresses. all of the “bohemian” style

I get all mine at. It’s not too expensive, great sales all the time, and shipping is just $5. Try that out.

Have you tried shopping at Old Navy or the Gap? They both have great maternity clothes. Also, Pea in a Pod and Motherhood Maternity has really pretty, trendy clothing.

I made it through a very large part of my pregnancy without maternity tops. The pants were necessary, but those are easier to work with.
I went to places like Ross and Marshalls and shopped in the juniors or misses section (the size I normally wear) and got plenty of trendy shirts that are baby-doll style, empire waist, etc. Several are tank tops and I just put a solid baby-t or long sleeved t underneath. Very hippie chic looking.
Now, though, I am a house. A very large house. A mansion actually. Even many of my maternity tops don’t cover my belly. I’ve graduated to my hubby’s XL t-shirts and boxer pants. :(

I’m on my second pregnancy, and I haven’t worn any maternity clothing either time. I found it was easier to check the sale racks at my favorite stores, and buy a size or two bigger. I wear regular jeans and baby-doll like tops. When i feel lazy or tired, a cute track outfit or t-shirt and jeans fits. When you’re done with them, you can either keep them for the next time you get pregnant, if there is one, or you can take them to Goodwill or Salvation Army. Someone will benefit either way. Good luck!

Pea in the Pod, Motherhood Maternity and Mimi Maternity were my favorites. Gap also has a nice essentials kit. Keep looking, you’ll find stuff you like.

I know what you mean! I am *HAVING* a baby…but I’m still a full-grown person. I don’t need to dress in sailor tops with giant bows, or shirts that say “baby on board”, or stuff that has “sparklies!” or flowers bigger than my head! Just TRY to find maternity things in black….ARG!

Here’s what I found that has worked for me through my pregnancy with our son and this time around as well:

*Long Ts-Thank God they are super popular now! You know the ones that come down to your thigh when you’re not pregnant? Get it one size bigger and it’ll cover your belly to the end!

*Wrap dresses-I love these!!! I have a bunch of them, and they can be made out of all sorts of cool fabrics-I have one that is a stretchy fabric underneath and has this super cool crochet overlay on it…you just have to shop around! You can wear them by themselves, or with a pair of jeans underneath and a pair of ballet flats which I personally think looks cute (but not BARFY cute) and different, while still accomodating baby belly.

*Shirt Dresses-Try to get ones without buttons if you can, and then find a cool wide belt and belt it over your baby belly instead of at your belly button.

*”Hippie” tops-I don’t know what everyone else calls them, but they are the ones with the elastic under the bust and the flowy bottoms. You can wear those all the way through if they are long enough.

*Jeans-you may have to get special maternity jeans at some point, but I never did. I bought one size up and that did just fine until about a week before I had my son, when he finally dropped-I couldn’t button them anymore. I didn’t want to buy stupid maternity pants for a week so I took a hair band, put it over the button, looped it through the button hole, and then wound it back around the button…then put on a belt.

You can use the clothes you have, or go shopping at your regular stores, just buy up a size and get creative (dont be afraid to use a dress as a shirt, or layer several different types and sizes of shirts, etc.).

Have fun and congrats on the baby!
