How can I get my daughter to dress nicely and not embarrass me?

My 16 year old always insists on wearing ripped up and unflattering clothing, which she insists is stylish. Whenever I take her to family gatherings, or dinner parties at friends’ houses, my husband and I are always embarrassed by her choice in clothing and we end up having a huge argument with her. My husband is a respectable doctor in our community and she always chooses to dress as if she’s on welfare. I always buy her expensive clothing, but she tells me she would rather go to the thrift store and buy used clothes. How can I get her to look more presentable in public?
